Carbon paper was once used by typists to make copies of things they typed in real time.  One sheet of carbon paper went between the original and the copy paper; when the typewriter struck the hammer, some carbon would transfer from the carbon paper to the sheet beneath.  This is where the phrase "carbon copy" came from.
